What To Wear For Snowy Family Photo Sessions

Snowy family photos are always fun, but deciding what everyone should wear can sometimes be tricky...so we put together some great color palettes and tips to help you with your snowy photos!

Red, Black, Gray & White are really pretty together and have a great rustic feel for winter photos.  We are thoroughly in love with red & black plaid this season!  It just gets us in the holiday spirit!  Red is always a super pretty pop of color...especially in a field of Evergreens.  Very festive!

Cool blues are also beautiful for snowy photos-think icy, wintery.  Blue is the perfect shade to compliment a glistening snowfall.

Pops of bright colors are always fun in the snow!  We love color, and the neutral white background of snow gives you the perfect opportunity to show some fun color! Pick brightly colored scarves and accessories to spice up your photos!

Winter Neutrals like shades of subtle grays & creams are amazing in the snow too, and can be really classy!

Lastly, don't forget your fun winter accessories: fur hats, winter coats, knit hats, and scarves!!!  They are super festive and add dimension to your photos!

One of the most fun and challenging parts of getting family photos is figuring out what everyone is going to wear!  We totally understand this and want to help with some tips on coordinating outfits for beautiful final prints!

Coordinating colors photograph better than perfectly matching outfits.  So start with a color palette of 3 to 4 coordinating colors, and select outfits within that palette.  

If starting out with a color palette is overwhelming, start with one outfit that inspires you and build from there.  

Layering with fun accessories is an easy and natural way to add dimension, but try not to overdo it or they may end up being  distracting.  Try to avoid logos and lettering as well, as they tend to be distracting. 

We want to capture authentic images of your family, so select clothes that reflect your personal style and taste!  Be comfortable and have fun!

The first day of fall is here and it's time to start pulling out the long sleeves and sweaters. Here are some ideas for your fall family portrait session or mini session. You can chose to make it casual or more dressy based on your style. Pick outfits that you are comfortable with and that reflect your family. You can use the color palettes from design-seeds as a start. Don't be afraid to use patterns or even pull out some flannel.

Summer Fashion | Highlands Ranch Photographer

It's officially summer! Here are a few outfit ideas for your summer family photo shoot. Remember to try and avoid white as a main color. Also, you don't have to try to find shirts all the same color, have fun mixing and matching. I find the easiest way to outfit the family is to start with a color palette (design-seeds.com has great examples), that narrows my search for clothes and I know everything will match.

Spring Fashion | Highlands Ranch Photographer

"What should we wear for our photos?" That is the biggest question I get as we approach Spring family portraits. If you are wondering what to wear there are a few main guidelines you can follow. 

Avoid white as a main color. White is great for photos on the beach and in the snow, but it provides a little too much contrast for spring in our Colorado mountains. Limit white to accessories instead of for a solid shirt or dress. 

Another good idea is to keep your family in one main color palette. You don't have to wear the same color shirt and jeans, but stick to a color group – like all pastels. There are some examples of sticking to a color group below. 

If your shirt has a large logo or letters that will be the first thing your eye goes to. A logo smaller than a business card should be okay, but avoid it if possible. Patterns on the other hand can add a nice texture and variety. One pattern, or two that compliment each other works best.

Shopping for an outfit for everyone can get overwhelming. If you already know of one outfit you have and like, use that as a base to pick the rest of the family's outfits. Then you have at least one less outfit to buy, and it's easier to chose the rest. The most important thing is to pick outfits that reflect your family and interests. Then your pictures will be the most meaningful to you.

Easter Mini Sessions Coming Soon | Highlands Ranch Photographer

Our Easter Mini Session this year is going to be extra special, we will have chicks! How cute will that be? The plan is to host it at my in-home studio, if the weather is extra amazing we may move it outdoors, however I'm having a custom backdrop made just for the shoot!

Spring Fashion Ideas

The biggest question I get about photo sessions is "What should I wear?" In truth I can make any clothing selection work within a chosen background but there are definitely choices that work better than others.

In general do not wear clothing with large high contrast logos on them, any text on your shirt will be one of the first things you look at in your image, if it is a small pocket sized logo it is probably OK.  Try to have everyone stay in the same tonal range, i.e. everyone is wearing pastels and jeans instead of one person wears a black shirt and the other wears a white shirt. 

Thanks to PinkleToes For Photographers for these lovely clothing designs, can't you just imagine your photos done while wearing these -- amazing: I believe all these outfits came from Old Navy last year.

This last set is probably my least favorite, but it still works because one person is wearing a dark shirt with light colored pants and the other is the opposite so you are still balanced in the photograph.
